Job Summary: Supervises projects/activities and subordinate staff engaged in the creation, planning, design, construction and/or maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, processes and/or components (or some combination thereof). Applies engineering standards and procedures; provides advice on issues within a given engineering discipline(s) to which the incumbent is assigned (fossil power, gas, electrical, environmental, civil/structural, etc.). Ensures that Corporate engineering policies, standards, and procedures are applied in the implementation of engineering activities and projects. Consults with management on standards and specifications within the given engineering discipline(s). Assignments are received in the form of results expected; incumbent has freedom to decide on the procedures to follow (consistent with Corporate/industry standards). May require the physical capacity to work in a power plant environment, e.g. climb stairs, work in hot and/or confined environments and/or passage of security screening & drug testing (required for access to certain areas). Span of control: approximately 5-15 jobs & 5-20 FTEs (direct & second-level) Key Accountabilities: - Ensures compliance with applicable industry regulations, codes or standards and company rules and regulations in projects and activities under his supervision. - Maintains awareness of industry issues through research and benchmarking; incorporates lessons learned in day to day engineering practice. - Analyzes problems and issues encountered in the performance of engineering related activities; provides engineering analyses and consultation to management, individuals and organizations within the Corporation. - Sets short term goals and priorities; participates in the development of long term goals and priorities. - Performs or ensures the accomplishment of the following core supervisory functions for a given group(s): short-term planning, organizing, determining workload and delegating assignments, directing the performance of ongoing activities and/or special & ad hoc assignments, staffing (employee selection, training/coaching & performance management, initiating corrective or disciplinary actions, time entry), coordinating, reporting & budgeting Required: Bachelor's degree engineering or engineering technology Required: Eight ( 8) plus of engineering work experience in an applicable discipline inclusive of two (2) years of work experience in an applicable discipline and one (1) year of senior-level, lead worker or supervisory experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Primavera or other engineering related software sufficient to apply them with minimal instruction or guidance (this level of proficiency is typically attainable through 3-plus year(s) of substantive experience with the applications). Preferred: Certification as a professional engineer and/or Project Management Institute (PMI) certification experience leading a project team; SAP/Maximo experience. - Proficient verbal, written and presentation skills; communicates clearly, with credibility and confidence. - Develops challenging short-term group plans & objectives aligned with those of the Division & Corporation; solicits staff input in the developing those plans & objectives. - Ability to develop / coordinate cross-functional work groups and projects, yielding optimal outcomes. - Ability to conduct effective meetings & manage the meeting process with optimal results. - Broad understanding of power generation, transmission, distribution and regional power dispatch issues. - Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges accepted practices & approaches with reasonably sound alternatives. - Well developed organization and planning skills (typically acquired through at least 5 years of experience). - Ability to apply project planning & implementation and/or continuous improvement principles (typically acquired through several years of experience in these areas) to affect tangible, positive outcomes. - Competent in multitasking (i.e. the ability to prioritize & manage multiple tasks, issues or projects that may include high visibility initiatives and require innovation, teamwork & planning). - Motivates through leading by example, coaching/mentoring and providing ongoing constructive feedback to subordinate staff; competent in systematically eliciting the best efforts & results from subordinate staff. - Deals effectively with resistance; takes positive steps to avoid the recurrence of errors through constructive critique. Incumbents may engage in all or some combination of the activities and accountabilities, and utilize varying combinations of the competencies cited in this description, depending on the organization & role to which they're assigned.
